We teach how to integrate the Snout-To-Tail Assessment into the initial client visit and for every future visit. This only takes a couple of minutes. This creates an on-going overall health assessment for the owner. A Pet Sitter who had taken our class at Quest told me she didn't’t even make it that far because on an initial client visit when she did the Snout-To-Tail Assessment, she found that the cat was very dehydrated. Initially, the owners were reluctant to believe her because this was the first time they had met her and the cat had been drinking so much water lately. However, because she was so professional in the way she handled the cat; taking the pet’s vitals (heart rate, breathing rate, temperature), they were more open to listening to her. They scheduled an appointment the next day with their vet and found that the cat was in the early stages of diabetes. Needless to say, the owners hired her and consider her a vital resource and an integral part in the health and care of their pet.

A pet owner who took our class loved her little dog because she did her homework assignment of the Snout-to-Tail Assessment. Where you go from “Snout-to-Tail” with deliberate intent and purpose creating a baseline of your pet’s health. Also, so that you know more of what is “normal” for your pet, so you can more quickly recognize what is not normal for your pet. She found mammary tumors growing on her dog. She took her to the vet, who confirmed the diagnosis. Luckily she caught it early enough that treatment was successful. However, the vet did tell her that if she had let that go just another five or six months, the outcome may not have been as good. This simple skill that can take only a few minutes added thousands of minutes to this pet’s life.
When I tell this story in the classroom, some people wonder how she didn't’t notice the mammary tumors in the first place. The thing is that she never really put her hands on her dog, from Snout-to-Tail, with deliberate intent and purpose, like we teach in the class. She said she would come home from work, make her dog dinner, have dinner herself, her dog would sit on her lap and she would pet it.
"Oh, the drudge of learning! Yea, I know stop the bleeding is the first thing you should do if someone/something is bleeding, but wait where are the pressure points on a dog? Thom provided us with that and so much more. I couldn't wait for the next day to begin. Several of my clients called after taking the PetSavers course to tell me how much information they got and how much of an impact the course had on them.
